Sketching, the gateway to ideas, begins the adventure that is art. Drawings in pencil, charcoal, or conte, are the essence of my painting. They are an intoxicating obsession. My studio is filled with sketchbooks going back years and years. My larger, more complex paintings always begin with a sketch. Pencil is the medium in which I don't have to think. I don't plan. I just start to draw, slashing in lines. Looking again at my subject, I dash and slash more lines onto the paper.
